Finding the Perfect Fit: Shoes for Kids with Foot Braces (AFOs, SMOs, and KAFOs)

On a recent family camping trip to the Washington coast, I met another mom whose child had Cerebral Palsy and wore AFOs. What started as casual small talk turned into an animated 30-minute conversation about something all too familiar to parents navigating foot braces: finding shoes that fit over them. We swapped tips, favorite brands, and frustrations, bonding over how much time we spend solving this universal issue. Finding the right shoes for kids wearing braces can feel like a full-time job.

Some families find success adapting regular shoes to work for foot braces by sizing up, removing the insole, or adding Velcro to the straps. (Your orthotist may even be able to help with modifications.) Because every child’s leg braces are unique, some shoe options may work better than others. It’s all about finding the right fit for your kiddo’s situation.

Zappos Adaptive

Zappos Adaptive is our first stop when searching for shoes that fit over our kiddo's braces. Their extensive selection includes brands like Nike Flyease, Converse, Kamik and New Balance, and their generous return policy makes finding the right pair so easy. We typically order several pairs of shoes in different sizes and styles to try at home. Once we find what works best for our kiddo we can easily return the pairs that don’t fit via UPS. Zappos’ thoughtful approach makes this process so much more manageable.

Top Shoe Brands That Fit Over Foot Braces

Billy Footwear

Billy Footwear has gained popularity for its zipper design that wraps around the entire foot, making it easy to fit over braces. While they’re stylish and functional, the mostly cloth design and weak zipper may not hold up as well for highly active kids.

Converse

Converse Chuck Taylors are a classic choice. We size up and use extra-long laces to make them work over braces. They’re stylish, versatile, and a reliable go-to.  We always have a red pair in rotation.

Crocs

Crocs are another great option for kids wearing braces. Their roomy design and adjustable heel strap make them easy to slip on over braces. Crocs also come in a variety of colors and styles, making them a fun and functional choice for many kiddos. Our little one adores her Minion-themed Crocs!

Ikiki

Ikiki Shoes are known for their playful designs and bright colors. They also allow you to purchase mismatched sizes for kids wearing a brace on one foot and Velcro strap extenders, making them an option for some brace-wearing families.

Kamik

Kamik Snowbug Boots are a winter favorite in our family. These boots are spacious enough to accommodate braces, providing warmth and protection for snowy adventures.

Nike

Nike Flyease shoes are made to fit over braces without sacrificing style or function. Also, we sized up a pair of Air Jordan low tops for our kiddo and she loved having Jordans like her friends.

Plae

Plae Shoes are a hit with their adaptive line with removable insoles and extra-long Velcro to fit over braces. They come in a variety of colors and styles.

See Kai Run

See Kai Run shoes are another fantastic option also offering an adaptive shoe line. With removable insoles and Velcro closures, these shoes offer flexibility for kids with braces.

Stride Rite

Stride Rite Project Fit Right offers a range of shoes designed to accommodate foot braces, from sporty tennis shoes to dressy Mary Janes. These shoes feature removable insoles, extra-long Velcro straps, and extra-wide toe boxes, making them an excellent choice for kids wearing braces. Our family especially loves the Holly-XW-Adaptable Mary Jane for a hard-to-find shoe that looks nice with dresses.

Surestep Shoes

Surestep Shoes are specifically designed to fit comfortably over your child's AFOs and SMOs. They're extra wide, extra deep, and come in various fun designs. Surestep, known for their expertise in pediatric orthotics, ensures that their shoes accommodate braces effectively, providing both comfort and style for your child.

Extra-Wide Styles from Other Brands

Parents have also had success with extra-wide options from New Balance—specifically their XW (extra wide) styles with laces—as well as Skechers. We’ve also had great luck with Target’s Cat & Jack line which often includes shoes with side zippers that work well with braces.

Shoes for Dolls: A Playtime Essential

Just as it can be challenging to find shoes for kids with foot braces, finding doll shoes to fit over our doll-sized braces is nearly impossible—until now. OrthoBaby offers slip-on doll shoes designed specifically to fit over our doll AFOs. Available in gray or white, these shoes make playtime more inclusive and representative for children who wear braces.
